My Great Holiday: the final destination
- describe the characteristic features of a particular thing,
person or place
- they may be short (2 to 3 words) or longer (2 to 3 paragraphs)
- they are often used in literary or poetic texts but are also
useful in science and HSIE
- help to classify particular things, persons or places
- lead to making generalisations about things, persons and places
Descriptions have:
- An introduction to the subject
- Statements about the characteristic features of the subject
- An optional concluding comment
- Evaluation may occur through the text
The introduction
- mostly a brief general statement about the subject
- may not include much detail
- the introduction will tell the reader just enough so that he/she
will want to keep reading
Characteristic features of the subject
- the writer describes or tells about the subject
- many adjectives are used - 3 to 4 at a time
- adjectives have a conventional order
- give number, size, colour, action and finally the genus (name,
kind, sort or class)
Optional concluding statement
- if the description is the whole text, rather than part of a
text, a short summary statement may 'finish off' the writing
- In literary and personal descriptions writers may make evaluation
statements throughout the text
