Holiday tracks - Writing Guide

My Great Holiday: the final destination
  • describe the characteristic features of a particular thing, person or place
  • they may be short (2 to 3 words) or longer (2 to 3 paragraphs)
  • they are often used in literary or poetic texts but are also useful in science and HSIE
  • help to classify particular things, persons or places
  • lead to making generalisations about things, persons and places

    Descriptions have:

  • An introduction to the subject
  • Statements about the characteristic features of the subject
  • An optional concluding comment
  • Evaluation may occur through the text

The introduction

  • mostly a brief general statement about the subject
  • may not include much detail
  • the introduction will tell the reader just enough so that he/she will want to keep reading

Characteristic features of the subject

  • the writer describes or tells about the subject
  • many adjectives are used - 3 to 4 at a time
  • adjectives have a conventional order
  • give number, size, colour, action and finally the genus (name, kind, sort or class)

Optional concluding statement

  • if the description is the whole text, rather than part of a text, a short summary statement may 'finish off' the writing
  • In literary and personal descriptions writers may make evaluation statements throughout the text
